Surtees, Robert Smith
(17 may. 1803, The Riding, Northumberland, Inglaterra–16 mar. 1864, Brighton, Sussex).

Novelista inglés. Apasionado desde su juventud a la caza con perros, Surtees dedicó casi la totalidad de sus escritos al tema de los caballos y la monta. En 1831 fundó New Sporting Magazine. Su famoso personaje cómico, el señor Jorrocks, un dueño de almacén de origen cockney (personas de estrato bajo nacidas al este de Londres) y fanático de la caza de zorros, apareció en Jorrocks's Jaunts and Jollities [Las excursiones y alegrías de Jorrock] (1838), La cruz de Handley (1843) y Hillingdon Hall [Salón de Hillingdon] (1845). Entre sus otras novelas, las que también retratan el tedio, los malos modales, la disconformidad y la rudimentaria comida de los provincianos en Inglaterra, se destacan Hawbuck Grange [La granja de Hawbruck] (1847) y Mr. Facey Romford's Hounds [Los sabuesos del Sr. Facey Romford] (1865).
